Feb 05, 2026 – Feb 18 2026

ghana citizenship

The Ghana Ministry of the Interior has introduced a new procedure for granting Ghanaian citizenship to “historic diasporans.”  The new application process includes an application fee of Gh₵25,000 ($2,286), with an initial administrative payment of Gh₵1,500 ($137). The West African government granted citizenship to 500 diasporans in 2024. The new process includes providing the following:

1. Application Form
2. Birth Certificate
3. Bio-data page of a valid passport
4. Proof of Legal Residence (two-year residence permit)
5. Police Clearance/Criminal Records Certificate from both the home country and Ghana
6. Evidence of Strong Ties to Ghana
7. Proof of DNA to support Ghanaian Descent
8. Citizenship application fee: Gh₵25,000 ($2,286)

The review process includes:

• Submission of listed criteria documents and payment of Gh₵1,500.00 administrative payment to the designated administrative center at the World Trade Center Accra for review from 2nd to 6th February 2026, 9am – 3pm (Not the Ministry of Interior)
• Notification of shortlisted applicants to complete and submit application forms online
• Pay citizenship application fee: Gh₵25,000.00 and complete vetting
• Citizenship orientation process with Diaspora Affairs Office upon approval of citizenship before induction ceremony
• Citizenship induction ceremony on 5th March 2026 by H.E. President John Mahama.

The Ghana government will subsequently invite qualified applicants to the Ghana Citizenship Induction Ceremony, scheduled for 5th March 2026, with additional details forthcoming.

Governments permit dual citizenship primarily for economic and diplomatic gains, as it attracts investment and skilled labor while maintaining ties to citizens abroad. Dual citizenship provides people with enhanced global mobility, access to opportunities across two countries, and a safety net during periods of uncertainty.

The US recognizes dual nationality but discourages it due to potential complications abroad. US citizens retain their status regardless of passport used, but the other country may assert primary allegiance if you're entering on its passport and potentially block full US consular access, like visits or aid.
