On Tuesday, June 27, 2023, the International African American Museum officially opened its doors to the public. As the newest museum of its kind in the world and occupying a stunning perch atop one of Charleston, South Carolina's most infamous former slave docks, the museum is far from a dreary catalog of suffering and woe. Wrapped inside an internationalist Afro- Atlantic context, the museum focuses on culture, resilience, and triumph over adversity while simultaneously evoking memory, space, art, and loss.

You can trace the development of the museum and the continuing growth of a sister institution in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in a four part series we published earlier. Below is a link to the first story, with links to the other three stories at the end.
