From Chicago Tribune investigations to the California Interim Reparations Report, Black Transgender issues are being integrated into the larger African American agenda.

In a recent report,The Tribune found that only about 23% of the violent deaths of transgender women in recent years have been solved by Chicago police, compared to 38% of homicides solved overall. Though the Chicago Police Department doesn’t track these deaths, The Tribune allocated resources to comb  through news clips, LGBTQ websites, and Cook County medical examiner’s records to come up with its finding.

The Tribune was able to identify at least some of the victims: 13 transgender people killed in Chicago since 2010, all of them women of color. Three of those transgender homicides or killings of transgender people by others have been solved.

As reported in the last issue of Port of Harlem, the California Interim Reparations Report cited many affects of slavery. When it comes to “An Unjust Legal System,” the Task Force included “Violence against Black trans people are underreported, unresolved and under-investigated.”

Identifying as a woman, trans or non-trans, is risky. A 2007 Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that Black women are four times more likely than White women to be killed as a result of domestic violence. Although Black women constitute only 13% of the U.S. population, they comprise half of the homicides against women in America.
