Black Christian Conservatives Seek to Unseat Ilhan and Allred

While a Democratic controlled United States House of Representatives has impeached the current US President, Republicans are tempting to take back control by defeating Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) members Ilhan Omar and Colin Allred with Black candidates.

Both CBC candidates represent districts that are not majority Black, with Omar’s district being 63 percent White and Allred’s 42 percent White. Both Omar and Allred are in their mid-thirties.

In Minnesota, one of America’s northern most states, Lacy Johnson’s campaign site proclaims “There are some issues I’m socially conservative on because of my Southern Baptist (Christian) background,”  and “Ilhan Omar has repeatedly attacked shared American values.” Johnson hopes to become the Republican nominee to challenge Ilhan Omar, who is also a Muslimah, in November 2020.

In Texas, one of America’s southern most states, Floyd McLendon declares on his campaign page that he “is a Christian conservative outsider who’s running for Congress to bring servant leadership back to DC and finally deliver on cutting taxes, limiting government, and securing the border.” He seeks to unseat Colin Allred, who like Omar, is a first term member.
