The Baobab Youth Development Association – Phillis Wheatley Library in Nema Kunku, The Gambia, held its second community fair, featuring sack races, bust the balloon, tug-of-war, and coloring activities. To promote literacy and use of the library, winners of the games won books.

As the library prepares to close for the rainy season, from July to October, when the rented building floods, the Port of Harlem Gambian Education Partnership (POHGEP) contemplates building a small new one on higher ground.

With 704 books, Jabel Ceesay, Wurry Jallow, and Fatou Camara operate the library:

Friday: from 4 pm to 8 pm
Saturday: from  9am to 8pm
Friday:  from  9am to 8pm.

The 113 books in the library in Soma, The Gambia, were merged with the Soma Mini-stadium, which the United Nations Population Fund partly funds. The Soma Youth Council is also involved.

The fans and windows we donated by POHGEP to the Soma library are now part of the Soma Scout Center. The European Union funded the center to train young people and discourage them from wanting to migrate to Europe.

The third library in Bakindik, The Gambia, never got off the ground, but the books are at the local school.

The country has a library in the capital city, a new one in Kannifing, located outside the capital city, and a few other smaller, private libraries.
