A Memorial Field for Those Who Died of Racial Violence

A Memorial Field is an online commemorative to people killed in an incident of racial violence, 115 of them specifically. Each memorial resembles a gray tombstone and with a click, displays the back of the monument that succinctly tells the story of the person’s racially-motivated killing, while unarmed and engaged in everyday activity until encountering law enforcement.

“We lament every incident of racial violence in the uncivil war against unarmed Black Americans. The more memorials speak to the depravity of police brutality and expose the racism at the root of our criminal justice system. The living memorial calls us to process the grief as we appeal for police reform,” write the curators.

If a church or institution would like to sponsor an installation, a downloadable version is available. Users can print the materials locally for an interior or exterior installation. The installation can be an entry point for difficult conversations about co-creating a world without police brutality.
