Carl Heyward, founder of The Global Art Project (GAP), an international collaborative social art practice, will curate two exhibitions. One exhibition will be in New York City and the other in Charlotte, North Carolina beginning on October 25, 2024 and running through January 4, 2025. The shows, “CrossingBorders: (We Are All Immigrants)” feature the work of 90 artists from 19 countries including Senegal; Eritrea; Nigeria; and Trinidad and Tobago.

The artists address a range of concerns from the obvious red button topic implied in the title to personal, gender-based, and psychological barriers. In our conversation Heyward asserted, “Institutions, be they social, political, governmental, or familial, have monopolized clout till individuals stand for their own truths and insist upon their individuality and authenticity be acknowledged and respected.”

To assert his truth, the California-based Heyward overlays the well-known 400-year-old slave ship schematic on a mirror finish metallic gold background. The installation includes black cakes created by Mia Chambers of Oakland, California. It’s titled “Cotton Pickin’ Cake Walk.’‘

He slaves ships he says “are the histories we are living today.” Gold he says, holds as a representation of access to the implements of power, luxury, and leisure lives at the dirty roots of the slave ships. Chambers’ cakes point to the hypocrisy of labor and goods acquired by criminal means and enjoyed at the expense of the victim. .
