If you are a Facebook user, you have until Friday, August 25, 2023 to claim a portion of a $725 million settlement. Completing the one-page form online is very easy. Submission receipts say the Final Approval Hearing is September 7, 2023 at 1p, Pacific Time, but does not indicate when Meta will make the payments.

You qualify for a portion of the settlement, says Meta, “If you were a Facebook user in the United States between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, inclusive.”  Payment size may depend upon how long you have had your account. Even if you no-longer have a Facebook account, you may be eligible for a smaller payment.

The Hill newspaper reports that Scott Dodson, a professor of law at UC Law San Francisco and the director of the Center for Litigation and Courts, estimates that the payments might be in the “triple digits,” with many more receiving less than $100.

Facebook parent company Meta recently agreed to pay the sum to settle claims it allowed people’s personal data to be shared with third parties. The most famous third party to get access was Cambridge Analytica, a consulting firm that supported Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

To file online, you will need to click here, answer a few questions about yourself, and then decide how you would like to be paid (prepaid gift card, direct deposit, PayPal, etc.) by 11:59p, the night of August 25.

To file by mail, you will need to print some forms and send them in to the settlement administrator in Philadelphia, it has to be postmarked by 11:59p,  the night of August 25.
