Praising the Past

library of congress magazine

Trinidad-American Hazel Scott had fame, money and artistic success, then she nearly lost it all. The Library of Congress Magazine’s January/February 2022 issue features a concise story about this little-known jazz star. In the article, you will also discover a world of jazz from the Library's collections.

Also in the magazine, are other jazz-related features. One of the features is on William Gottlieb and his photos photos. His photo of Billie Holiday served as the basis for the Billie Holiday postage stamp.

A third story is on Billy Strayhorn. he was the composer, arranger and songwriter for Ellington’s orchestra for three decades. “Billy Strayhorn was my right arm, my left arm, all the eyes in the back of my head,” Ellington wrote in his memoir. Lena Horne often remarked that she wanted to marry Strayhorn though he was a partnered, openly same-gender-loving person.

The 32-page publication includes another short piece on Ferdinand LaMothe, better known as Jelly Roll Morton, a tidbit on their Ella Fitzgerald Collection, a gift shop, and vintage photos that many jazz, general music, and history lovers; and photography enthusiasts and others will find pleasing. Access to the publication is free.
