Obama Legacy Speeches Oratorical Contest Winner

Aug 26 – Sep 08, 2021

Shabad Singh’s presentation of an excerpt from remarks by President Obama at the United States Women’s Summit won her the 2021 President Barack Obama Legacy Speeches Oratorical Contest.

The event showcased Prince George’s County, Maryland middle school students who presented two-minute excerpts from some of President Obama’s most iconic speeches - from pre-presidential oratory to his farewell speech in 2017.

The Charter Committee to Celebrate President Barack Obama held the annual contest virtually this year on August 4 to celebrate President Obama’s 60th birthday.

Lauren London was the second place winner. She presented a segment of President Obama’s speech that he delivered on Father’s Day, June 21, 2010. The third place winner was Jasmine Tucker, who delivered remarks made by President Obama at the 50th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery March.

A joint presentation by Ariana Mejia and Emma McDermott of President Obama’s remarks at the Sandy Hook Interfaith Prayer Vigil on December 16, 2012 was deemed the winner in the Ensemble Speech category.

“Today’s middle school students were just toddlers and small children during President’s Obama’s 2008 historic election victory and two-term presidency,” explained Janis Hagey, a member of the Charter Committee’s Board of Directors and Port Of Harlem magazine contributor. “As memories fade and history chisels away at the record of the Obama years, the Charter Committee will continue to organize community activities that preserve his legacy, that inspire, and that provide opportunities for our students to learn and grow,” Hagey continued.
