POH Reader Survey Results

October 8 – October 21, 2020

survey 2020

poh talk radio

We conducted our second Port Of Harlem Survey. The first being in 2017 and the second from June 18, 2020 through August 31, 2020. We got about 46 percent of our most repeated readers to participate by having you complete a short questionnaire. We use this and other data to create a better and more responsive product for you. Here the results of your collective responses.

We are elated that:
- 85 percent of our subscribers think Port Of Harlem is “about right,” and not too conservative or liberal.
- 88 percent of our subscribers think that the length of Port Of Harlem’s articles are “about right.”

Sexual Identification
Interestingly, about 62 percent of the magazine subscribers are female. The female readership is a bit different from the 48 percent of our Facebook likers and 47 percent of our Instagram followers who identify as female. We embrace diversity and happy to have at least one subscriber who identifies as “x.”  Among our podcast listeners, 100 percent have been female.

Social Media Users
About 1 in 4 of our respondents are on social media, but have not liked us on Facebook or Instagram. It is possible that they are using other social media platforms that we don’t use. We must word this question better next year to ask if they are on Facebook and Instagram and have not liked or followed us. However, if you are on Facebook or Instagram, we would love to connect with you now.

One Puzzling Question
We are puzzled by why 15 percent of our respondents have never suggested to a friend to subscribe to Port Of Harlem.  Port Of Harlem subscriptions remain free.

Where Our Readers Live: By City
The majority of our subscribers live in our base area, Metro Washington, DC (31 percent), followed by Other Maryland (4 percent), New York City (4 percent), Metro Baltimore (3 percent), Other Virginia (3 percent), and Metro Chicago/Gary (2 percent).

This slightly mirrors the locations of our Facebook followers: Washington (11 percent), Banjul (7 percent), New York City (4 percent), Gary (2 percent), Baltimore (1 percent), and Chicago (1 percent).

It even mirrors our Instagram followers:  Washington (29 percent), Banjul (8 percent), New York (4 percent), with the notable addition of Houston (2 percent), and Chicago (2 percent).

Where our Readers Live:  By Country
Country-wise, the majority of our subscribers live in the United States (98 percent), followed by The Gambia (1 percent), Panama (.5 percent), and Canada (.5 percent).

This too, slightly echos the locations of our Facebook followers: United States (71 percent), The Gambia (7 percent), and Italy, South Africa, United Kingdom, and Nigeria (about 1 percent each for the four later countries).

Our Instagram statistics also mirror the other results, with United States (84 percent) leading, followed by The Gambia (8 percent ), and Nigeria, Kenya, and the United Kingdom at 1 percent each. The notable addition is Kenya.

Our podcast listeners, again, are breaking the mold:  United States (83 percent) followed by France, Philippines, and Australia (5 percent each), with the notable additions of the later three.

Our Response to Some Comments and Suggestions
Some readers express wanting more news from the diaspora, outside of the United States. Well, we also have other metrics we look at including the number of clicks and shares on each and every article sent via email and on our web page. And, the metrics on such articles don’t warrant us to include even more news on Africans outside of the United States. We do encourage you to read  and share “The Gambia: Why MPs Just Shot Down the Popular New Draft Constitution,” that is in this issue.

The same is true of the likes and shares we get on the diaspora outside of the United States related articles that we share on Facebook including posts from The East African, The Daily Nation (Kenya), The Standard (The Gambia), and The Voice (United Kingdom).

When it comes to advertisers, one person looked for advertisers in their particular city. Some advertisers serve only Metro DC, but many serve the nation and even the world including: Champion Services Travel, Aviva Travel, African American Historical and Genealogical Society, American Standard, and now that things are virtual Wooly Mammoth Theater and Mosaic Theater. Port Of Harlem Gambian Education Partnership and Travel to Ghana with Ebenezer AME Church also serve the world.

If we did not answer your question, please send us your question by email now.  We will answer it promptly.

Age
While we did not collect age data in the survey, our typical podcast listener is noticeably younger at aged 25-34 ((100 percent) compared to our Facebook typical liker who is 65+ (25 percent) and typical Instagram follower who is also 65+ (30 percent).

Thanks for Supporting Our Advertisers
Supporting our advertisers is the best way you can support Port Of Harlem. They keep us independent and they keep the magazine free to you. All nine of our advertisers received some support from you, thanks. With the National Black Memorabilia Show getting the most support (34 percent), followed by Mosaic Theater (29 percent), the African American Historical and Genealogical Society (23 percent), and Woolly Mammoth (20 percent).
