Netflix has officially ordered a sequel series to the famous 1990s sitcom “A Different World.” The new show will follow a new group of students at the made-up Hillman College, with the daughter of the original characters, Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert-Wayne, as the main character.

The original show, which ran from 1987 to 1993 as a spinoff to “The Cosby Show,” was one of the first to highlight life at a historically Black college or university (HBCU) on TV, with many accrediting the show for influencing more individuals to enroll at HBCUs.

 


Netflix has now given the go-ahead for a sequel that hopes to capture that same spirit for a new generation.

“It is such an honor to be a part of bringing back this iconic show, one that I grew up on and which had a profound impact on my life,” Felicia Pride, who serves as showrunner and executive producer, said in a statement.
